Andrew Jackson2 essays My name is Andrew Jackson, and I was the 7th president of the United States. People tell me that I have a lot to be proud of, because I wasnt just a president, I worked as a prosecuting attorney, and I fought in the war. Ive heard people say that I was the best-loved and most-hated president the young nation had ever known. I named a era after myself, and always lived according to the rugged, straightforward code of the American frontier. In 1802, I was elected major general of the military force. The turning point in my life was definitely my service in the War of 1812. One of my first victories was over the Creek Indians. Inspired by the British attacks on the Americans, the Creeks raided frontier settlements in Georgia and Alabama. My Tennessee military and I crushed the Creeks at the battle of Horseshoe Bend, Alabama, on March 27, 1814. After winning that battle, I was then ordered to defend New Orleans. I built up my small regular army, and recruited frontier riflemen from Tennessee and Kentucky, and also gathered a force of volunteers. On January 8, 1815 the British troops charged. It was a massacre; the British withdrew after suffering 2,237 deaths, while we only lost 71. We won the battle, however fighting the battle was a tragic mistake. Only days earlier, December 24,1814, a peace treaty had been signed. Communication was so slow, that the news just didnt reach me in time. Of course my little victories didnt affect the outcome of the War of 1812, but it did make me a national hero. With the exception of Gen. William Henry Harrison, no American except me had achieved anything like military triumph. In 1817 I was ordered to the Alabama-Georgia region to defend settlers against attacks by Seminole Indians from Florida. News Media and Society essays The media sources that I usually use consist of the television, radio, computer, and newspapers. The stations that I watch most are CNN, ESPN, MTV, and FOX news. The radio stations I listen to are mostly music oriented, but I occasionally listen to KDKA talk shows. I use my computer to get on the internet and I like to use MSNBC. The newspaper I currently receive is the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. When I want to learn about the local news I tend to listen to KDKA on the radio and read the Pittsburgh Post. For my national news I watch CNN and Fox news. I also log onto the internet where I will visit MSNBC frequently. I use the television probably the most to get my information because it is by far the most convenient. I am able to quickly get news and be entertained at the same time. A close second is the internet. As computers become quicker and easier to use, I am enjoying surfing the internet more for my information. I usually do not read magazines, because I do not have the time to read them. I currently subscribe to one magazine and that is Kiplingers. I am usually unable to read each monthly issue by the time I get the next one. I think I am influenced by the media by what channels and programs I watch and listen to. Most of the programs I like are on the informative side. The talk shows I listen to seem to support different views. I tend to side with some of the conservative approaches because some of the programs I watch support their views. A good example of how I am influenced and how I think others are influenced by what news programs they listen to happened the other day. I was watching a Fox news program on the appointment of the new Iraqi government that was replacing the current one assigned by the U.S. The report was very positive and talked about how this process was the first step for the Iraqis to take control back over their country. However, there are a number of problems with this approach that have been discussed as follows:- 1. Some regions are more favored than others at establishing successful small businesses and entrepreneurs and hence their economic development is more successful. The question of whether this is due to characteristics in the population or due to certain aspects of the environment and infrastructure which enable potential entrepreneurs to exploit their skills and opportunities more easily, remains, at this stage, an open one. For example, research undertaken for Scottish Enterprise (2), after concern with low participation rates in entrepreneurship, showed that a complex series of factors contributed to low participation rates in Scotland. For example, the historical dependence of the population on a limited number of large employers coupled with inward investment (North Sea oil) had produced a 'dependency culture', that is, that people were used to depending on large employers for employment. Thus, the thought of going into business on their own account did not come easily to them. Yet other factors were important as well such as lack of finance. This example shows why participation rates might be different in particular regions for varying complex reasons. 2. Concern has been expressed at the existence of latent entrepreneurial talent. For example, why are there so few successful female entrepreneurs Again this remains open question which appears to have no simple solution but rather is caused by a complex combination of social and economic reasons. Little research has been conducted specifically on these groups in the UK, although a study carried out by the David Deakins and Ram (3) with African - Caribbean entrepreneurs suggests that motivations among this minority group in the UK consists of a combination of positive (pull) and negative (push) factors. Positive factors are associated with the attractions of entrepreneurship and negative factors are associated with limited opportunities in the inner-city and deprived urban environments. 3. Attention has focused on the role of networks in successful entrepreneurial development. For example, some research suggests that inter-firm networks contribute to successful entrepreneurship as discussed below. Start-ups (4): We know that a high proportion of new firms fail within three years of start - up. For example, in the UK, 30 percent of new firms cease trading by the third year and 50 percent by the fifth year. In addition, there is only a small proportion that grow to employ 50 workers.
